Our History
People to Places was founded in response to the growing need for accessible and reliable transport services for residents in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead who faced mobility challenges.
At a time when public transport options were limited for people with disabilities or health conditions, there was a clear gap in provision. Recognising this, Reverend Peter Hudson and a group of dedicated individuals came together to create a community-led solution—one that would enable greater independence, reduce isolation, and ensure everyone had the opportunity to travel with dignity and confidence.
When It All Began
Reverend Peter Hudson, the Methodist minister in Maidenhead, realised there was a need within his community for transport for those with mobility issues. He started a campaign to engage the local community in a project to both raise money and to give practical help to form a transport service for people with restricted mobility in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

Dial-a-Ride Service Commences
After a year of fundraising, People to Places began with two second hand minibuses, two paid drivers and one office employee, and the organisation was registered with the Charity Commission, all within our first year.

Our First Milestone
To mark our first five years as a charitable organisation, a special celebration was held and we were honoured by the presence of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. A presentation was made to Rev Peter Hudson in recognition of the essential role he played in the establishment of the service.
Incorporated and Recognised
People to Places was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee and re-registered with the Charity Commission.

A New Home
Seiko UK became a major supporter of our Charity by providing a priceless donation when they started hosting People to Places at their new head-office, in Maidenhead.

Shopmobilty
People to Places commenced the delivery of the Shopmobility service across the Royal Borough in addition to our community transport services.

25th Anniversary Celebration
In 2014, People to Places celebrated its 25th anniversary with a gala dinner at the Odney Club in Cookham. The event was attended by notable guests, including the Mayor of Windsor and Maidenhead, Councillor Richard Kellaway, and Maidenhead MP, Theresa May, who commended the charity’s significant contributions. Reverend Peter Hudson, the founder of People to Places, was honoured as a founder patron during the celebration.

150,000 Shopmobility Hires
In 2019, People to Places marked a major milestone when Rita Pike of Maidenhead became the 150,000th person to use the charity’s wheelchair and scooter hire service. This achievement reflected the charity’s long-standing commitment to supporting mobility and independence for residents with disabilities and mobility challenges across the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.
Relocation
After 17 years at SC House, People to Places moved to a new base at St Mark’s Hospital in Maidenhead. While the move brought changes, it also offered an opportunity to adapt and continue evolving as a charity. The new location placed the organisation within a busy community setting, helping to maintain strong links with local services and allowing People to Places to remain focused on its mission—supporting residents with limited mobility across the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.
